RENOVATOR SPOTLIGHT: Labourer to President - Oliver Brown on the Power of Rethinking Home
Oliver Brown didn't come to renovation through a boardroom. He started at the bottom, hauling materials and swinging a hammer as a labourer, in a family that lived and breathed the renovation business. Today he's President of Rusch Design Build, a full-service residential design-build company in Calgary that takes on everything from smaller renovations to whole-home transformations and additions topping $1 million.
What's kept him in the trade all these years comes down to one word: transformation.
"It's rewarding to take an existing home that may no longer work for a family and completely rethink it so it fits the way they live today," Oliver says.
Some of the most meaningful projects Oliver's team takes on start with a familiar dilemma. A family loves their street, their neighbours, and their kids' school. The problem is the house. The kitchen is cramped, the layout is closed off, and there aren't enough bedrooms for the way their life has grown.
Moving feels like the only answer. It isn't.
Through a major renovation, Rusch Design Build can completely change how a home works. They open up the main floor, create a kitchen that actually works as a gathering space, add bedrooms, or reimagine the primary suite. The result is a home that feels brand new, without leaving the community the family loves.
When a renovation changes a child's everyday life
Oliver's team also works with ARK – Accessible Renovations for Kids, a Calgary non-profit that creates accessible spaces for children with mobility challenges.
These projects hit differently. A wider doorway, an accessible bathroom, or a home a child can move through independently can change a family's daily routine overnight.
"Those projects are a great reminder that renovation isn't always just about making a home look better," Oliver says. "It can genuinely change how a family is able to live in and use their home."
The day it all gets real
Ask Oliver about his favourite moment on the job, and he doesn't hesitate: demo day.
"You can spend months planning and designing a renovation, but demolition is when everything suddenly becomes real," he says. "There can be a huge amount of change in just a day or two, and you really start to see the potential of the new space."
Of course, the finish line is pretty sweet too, watching homeowners walk into a space that finally fits their lives.
Oliver's advice: don't rush to the hammer
If there's one thing Oliver wishes every homeowner understood, it's this: a successful renovation starts long before demo day.
It's tempting to rush into construction, because that's when a project feels like it's really happening. But the design and planning phase is where the real work gets done. Working through the layout, selections, details, budget, and construction plan up front makes the build smoother and takes a lot of surprises off the table.
In other words, the best renovations are won on paper first.
Building stronger communities, one home at a time
Oliver sees the impact of renovation reaching well past the front door.
As a local company, Rusch Design Build creates jobs for its own team and steady work for Calgary trades, suppliers, and businesses. And every renovation breathes new life into the city's established neighbourhoods. Instead of tearing down an older home or moving away, families can reinvest in the homes that are already there, extending their life for decades to come.
It's a reminder that renovation isn't just about beautiful kitchens and open-concept living. It's about keeping families rooted, keeping local businesses thriving, and keeping communities vibrant.
