Building Code & Environmental Authority

Members continue to express concerns over potentially expansive powers and authorities for Charter Cities to make modifications to the Alberta Building Code on matters related to the environment. The Government of Alberta has been clear that the two cities do not have authority to modify Building Code but it continues to be a matter local associations have to contend with.

Builders construct homes in multiple jurisdictions and having to contend with multiple building codes is an untenable situation that discourages further investment. If adoption is fractured, builders lose the ability to create savings on a scale and must meet different construction criteria in different jurisdictions. Development of building codes must remain consistent throughout the province and not governed through multiple different legislations.
